THE YOUTH ZONE AT 2015 OVERTOWN MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL

FestivalMiami, FL, July 31, 2015:  On Saturday, July 25, 2015 over 6,000+ families converged on NW 3rd Avenue in Historic Overtown for the 2015 Overtown Music & Arts Festival to experience the rich culture of Overtown.  T.E.E.S. produced an extraordinary Youth Zone presented by The Green Family Foundation and Early Learning Coalition.

Everything from workshops, to bounce houses, to fitness and arts n’ craft activities adorned the NW 3rd Avenue corridor between NW 8th & 9th Streets. A beautifully decorated stage hosted by 99 Jamz personalities was made possible by the youth zone shining star sponsor, Miami Innovation District. Families enjoyed high energy performances by Overtown Youth Center and The Motivational Edge organizations. Formula 1 Fitness coordinated fun sporting competitions in the Overtown Child & Youth Coalition (OCYC) Fitness Zone with obstacle courses, tug of war, and relay races. Autism Soccer was on hand with pick up soccer games and workshops in the FP&L Game Zone. Prizes were provided courtesy of St. John’s CDC.


In the Arts and Craft Zone, children participated in the creation of personalized hula hoops, sketching, coloring, and paper creations. The Miami Dade Library Mobile Bus was on hand to register families for library cards, as well as, conducted a story time for the little ones in an area decorated with lanterns and paper parrots hanging from trees. Over 100+ families signed up for library cards which were a big hit for Miami-Dade Public Library System Mobile Bus. Children & parents alike participated in a workshop of Chalk The Block where the entire area of NW 3rd & NW 9th Street was decorated with sidewalk chalk. The Super Sonic Jump Rope team showed off their award winning skills for all to see. For the second year in a row, local biker group, One Fist Riders, gave away free drawstring bags filled with school supplies.


Vendors lined the streets with snow-cones, cotton candy, and various other carnival fare. Teens Exercising Extraordinary Success Founder Nikki Kancey stated that, “We are overjoyed and pleased at the support and participation received for this years’ Youth Zone because it is important that we attract entire families to enjoy all that Overtown has to offer”.
