Join us in celebrating and supporting incarcerated writers!
Hear Us: Writing from the Inside During the Time of Covid is a unique collection of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and artwork. The 58 pieces from incarcerated writers, family members, and staff spanning from more than a dozen states –Alaska to California, Florida to Illinois, and more – describe how the pandemic and the killing of George Floyd impacted their lives.
The work shows, in vivid detail, how inequity and injustice play out in the era of mass incarceration. Originally published in collaboration with the New Orleans-based Disorder Press, with a foreword by award-winning author Edwidge Danticat, this cross-section of writers representing different religions, races, gender orientation, and writers with disabilities elevates the voices of those too-often silenced behind barbed wire.
On Thursday, November 4th at 7PM ET, we will be hosting a Hear Us National Launch! This one-hour virtual fundraiser event will include brief remarks by E4C and its cohost partners No Exceptions Prison Collective and Project Rebound, a special appearance by 2021 MacArthur Genius recipient Reginald Dwayne Betts, selected readings from Hear Us contributors, and a call to action. Tickets are priced on a sliding scale, and all proceeds will go to help more writers incarcerated in Florida have what they need to survive, thrive, and flourish.

Green Family supports The Adrienne Arsht Center’s newest program, The Ninth
Last month, The Green Family Foundation has the honor of attending Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts' 15th Anniversary Reunion Gala to celebrate the Center's impactful arts education & engagement programs. The introduction of The Ninth - an immersive theatre experience to bring youth mental health awareness to high schools across Miami Dade County - inspired Kimberly Green, Mireille Charles, and the Green Family Foundation to donate $15,000 to support its launch.
"The Green Family Foundation recognizes the importance of good emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing in teens, influencing their interaction with others, and their ability to handle stress and social interactions. The Arsht Center is uniquely positioned to reach Miami-Dade County’s teens through innovative and creative interventions. We are proud to support their efforts," Kimberly Green said.

Foundation Office of Inclusive Philanthropy gathers community for free screenings, discussion of film depicting Arthur McDuffie’s legacy

The anniversary of George Floyd’s death at the hands of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin falls on May 25, 2021. In remembrance of Floyd and countless others, the FIU Foundation Office of Inclusive Philanthropy (FOIP) hosted free screenings of Dudley Alexis’s award-winning film, “When Liberty Burns,” at the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater on May 15 and 16.

International University Foundation’s Office of Inclusive Philanthropy, in collaboration with Florida International University’s Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and the Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab, is pleased to present another Virtual Roundtable entitled:
"When Liberty Burns: Race Relations in America"

"When Liberty Burns," a documentary directed by Dudley Alexis, highlights the life and death of Arthur L. McDuffie. On December 17, 1979, after failing to stop for a traffic light, police officers gave chase. After realizing he could not escape, McDuffie surrendered. He was beaten until he lost consciousness. That beating by multiple officers caused his death. Acquittal of the offending officers charged in the murder sparked a civil disturbance in Miami’s urban core.
The “McDuffie Riots” ultimately changed Miami-Dade County and became a symbol of the city’s struggle to contend with race relations and its sordid history during the Jim Crow era. May 25, 2021, will mark one year since George Floyd was killed while in police custody. This virtual Roundtable Discussion will highlight Race Relations and the role of White supremacy and American policing.
