Promoting artists of color through Prizm Art Fair

Mikhaile M. Solomon M.Arch. '11 is the mastermind behind the Prizm, a one-of-a-kind art fair with a mission to promote artists of color.

The art fair was founded in 2013 after Mikhaile noticed a lack of visibility for artists of the African diaspora during Miami's biggest art festival, Art Basel. Since Art Basel is regarded as one of the most prestigious art festivals in the globe, Mikhaile is hoping to use it as a platform to highlight the talents of these magnificent local and regional artists.

We conducted a Q&A with Mikhaile to learn more about her years at FIU and how PRIZM came to be.

WHAT: PRIZM Art Fair

WHY: Miami Art Week attracts numerous high-quality satellite fairs, but sometimes it's the one sitting a little to the side that has the energy to perk up the art ears. Such is the case with PRIZM, an art fair that highlights works from the African Diaspora, but not exclusively. Set up in the MIMO district on Biscayne, this year's installment features 18 artists from across the country and globe. All eyes should be drawn to the stylized portraits shot in Senegal, from Paris native Alexis Peskine. In one photograph, two boys wearing DIY auto-racing uniforms are perched on a bench near the beach; the younger boy's posture itself tells a story, while the older boy's stare reveals a complexity beyond words.

T.E.E.S. produced an extraordinary Youth Zone presented by The Green Family Foundation and Early Learning Coalition.

photos NSU Art Museum Exhibit, June 21 – October 4, 2015

Photography has provided ongoing and important narratives of Haiti’s people, art, culture and politics since the advent of the medium in the 19th century. From June 21 through October 4, 2015, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale will present the first comprehensive museum survey of photography in Haiti in the exhibition From Within and Without: The History of Haitian Photography.
